The main idea is that a basic neurological exam for suspected stroke should quickly assess a broad range of brain and nerve functions to detect focal deficits. The best answer includes mental status to judge consciousness and cognition, facial symmetry to identify facial nerve or motor pathway problems, limb strength and tone to find weakness or spasticity, sensation to detect sensory loss, coordination to test cerebellar function, gait to observe walking and balance, reflexes to assess the integrity of reflex pathways, and cranial nerves to screen multiple brainstem and cranial nerve functions.
